The Polar Opposite of Las Vegas..

Sex In Zion

I stumbled upon the article above somehow and was just amazed at how things work sometimes in Utah, our neighbor to the northeast. Mormons have quite a presence in Las Vegas (after all, they really were the first ones here after the Native Americans), but I would never imagine this type of service ever working nor could I ever imagine myself ever trying to work for this type of service. Apparently in the long run it didn’t last, but I am sure there are quite a few other services that are around today.

When I went to the courthouse to apply for my Sexually Oriented Business License from the city, the cheerful clerk’s smile slid downward when she saw what I was applying for. I was fingerprinted and interviewed by a detective who talked of perverts, bestiality, sin and the awful things that could happen to girls sent to meet strange men in hotel rooms. He handed me a pamphlet that began: “She drives carefully, but as fast as she can. She reaches for a piece of gum. It will do until she gets home and scrubs that taste and filth from her mouth.”

I couldn’t hold in my snickers after reading that part…

I think that side of working comes from a really true place actually. Even if some escorts may never have had those types of feelings. And I think some do mean well, even if it comes out in quite a misguided way, when they want to protect girls from being used in this world where the things that officer mentioned, do exist. Some may be more focused on people staying away from sin, which is not a side of the matter I really care as much for. But anyway, I don’t think it’s really stuff to chuckle at because no doubt there is a dangerous backside to sex work.

My chuckles weren’t of how they handle the agencies or how the agency handles the girls, I was laughing more at the way that little blurb was written deter a girl from working at an escort agency. Like suddenly she would be shocked and just change her mind… kind of the same thing with the anti-drug commercials on tv. I think it’s a waste of time as if a commercial would really change what kids thought about doing drugs.

Sure, not that alone. But still, the way the media can drip feed us into believing certain things does have an influence. It’s undeniable that it’s a part of our society. But of course, it is for better and for worse. Probably often worse. Sometimes highlighting “bad” things can serve an opposite effect. It may just spark curiosity, and then it can even serve to educate, in the reversed way it was meant. When I was thrown into involuntary treatment for my eating disorder, I wasn’t aware of alot of the “tricks” I could apply to myself to lose more weight, that is, until my doctor asked me if was doing various things I’d never heard of before (I immediately started doing those things). As well as the tricks I could use to appear to be at a higher weight than I really was, before getting weighed (like drinking copius amounts of water – it never occured to me before my doctor warned me of it, by asking if had been doing that). Similar thing, I learned of escorting through reading an article warning girls of the risks involved, and that article alone was my reference, making me think I could do that to earn that kind of money. I still wouldn’t say it’s pointless for governments to attempt to educate the youth about things like safe sex/std’s & the illegality/dangers associated with substance abuse. Even if some of the kids watching aren’t receptive right then, once they’re past that rebellious phase, they might actually refer back in their mind to their knowledge of the risks and see their lives more worthy to be spared and stop using. If they never learned in the first place other than by experience, – and if they never got into real trouble, that “experience” won’t serve as much of an inhibitor – how are they even given a chance to take an educated choice? I mean, in whatEver way it may help, if it helps at all, some, it’s gotta be worth it right? Even if its just one part of dealing with these problems.

Indeed… I also agree that it sometimes is for the worse. People bringing attention to things that are “bad” sometimes sound more appealing to them to actually do it. If whatever they are doing to handle services in Utah is working then carry on… I just think it’s a waste of their time to write such silly stories.
